Street Pastors is an inter-denominational church ministry that seeks bring together Christians of all ages, backgrounds and traditions who have a heart to serve people on the streets of Newcastle. This project started in December of 2008.
Street Pastors patrol the streets on Fridays and Saturdays between 10pm – 4am and Saturday afternoons between 2pm - 4pm. They take items with them to help practically such as flip flops, water, food items, plasters, bandages, space blankets etc. They deal with situations from simple first aid to looking after victims of violent attacks, from encouraging local street cleaners to sitting and praying with the homeless, from giving directions to getting a vulnerable female home safely. They seek to bring the kingdom of God to the darkest places in our city. The values SPN hold to can be identified in Luke 10: 25 – 37 and 1 John 3:18.
St Luke's is an active partner in this ministry, giving in terms of prayer, people and pounds. Street Pastors fits into our vision of seeing our communities transformed by the love of God. Through Street Pastors, God is making a tangible difference in the lives of people in Newcastle. SPN also dovetails with HOTS and SOL in terms of our partnership with ecumenical ministries, bringing the reality of the love of God to our city. SPN is lead by Sam Douthwaite, who is one of our senior leaders at St Luke's..
