St. Luke's Church

History

Bishop Martin And RobertSt Luke’s was built in 1886 as the daughter church of At Andrews, the oldest church in Newcastle. The faithful congregation dwindled until in 2006 the church was closed. The bishop of Newcastle then invited Robert to become Vicar and to bring in the fledgling congregation (which we called New Wine on Tyne!) which he had begun 3 years earlier with 7 adults and 3 children in a small council hall, thus becoming a unique Anglican hybrid – a parish church that is also a Fresh Expression! There was a wonderful induction service held in January 2007. The church building itself is a little run down, and without heating very cold so for now St Luke’s meets in the adjoining delightful Grade 2 listed hall which we are steadily refurbishing to accommodate our growing needs and outreach.

So now we are concentrating on our foundations and moving towards embracing the ‘Missional Community’ DNA with a more intentionally outward looking perspective to complement the caring family feel that God has given us.
